According to a recent report in the Washington Post, two Congressional Democrats who had held up a major arms sale to Israel over humanitarian concerns about the war in Gaza have signed off on the deal under pressure from the Biden administration. New York Rep. Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, were the holdouts. Meeks had vowed to hold up the arms package until he received assurances from the administration about how the warplanes and munitions would be used in Gaza, where local health officials say well over 37,000 Palestinians have been killed.Cardin is a strong supporter of Israel but stood with Meeks in an act of collegial solidarity, the newspaper also reports.The $18 billion weapons package, among the largest the U.S. has sent to Israel, was first notified to Congress in January, and the Republican leaders on the committee have already signed off on the transfer.The new weapons package will next be notified to the rest of Congress. At that point, they can act to block the arms transfer by adopting a joint resolution of disapproval (JRD), but they only have 15 days to do so.Call your reps and senators and demand that they submit a joint resolution of disapproval (JRD) to stop this $18 billion weapons arms sale to Israel and to vote yes when the JRD comes to the floor for a vote.
